MIL-F-81738 Flare, Aircraft, Parachute, Mk 45 Mod 0This specification covers the manufacture and preparation for delivery of the Flare, Aircraft, Parachute, MK 45 Mod 0, the MK 45 Aircraft Parachute Flare and Drogue Tray, and the methods of examination and tests upon which product acceptance shall be based. The flares or Mk 45 drogue trays are a delay type flare, designed for launching from aircraft, which produce a parachute suspended illuminating candle. The flare or Mk 45 drogue tray is classified as Class B Explosives \(Code of Federal Regulations 49 CFR 71-78\) ad IIC Explosive \(Coast Guard Rules and Regulations for Military Explosive and Hazardous Munitions CG 108\).

3.2.1 Components, assemblies and materials. All components, assemblies and

materials of the flare or Mk 45 drogue tray shall meet the requirements of their

respective specifications and drawings.

3.2.1.1 Fuze. The fuze shall meet the requirements of the applicable specification.

3.2.1.2 Primer. The primer shall meet the requirements of the applicable

specification.

3.2.1.3 Detonator. The detonator shall meet the requirements of the applicable

specification.

3.2.2 Flare. The flare shall meet the requirements of this specification.

3.2.3 Mk 45 Drogue Tray. The Mk 45 drogue tray shall meet the requirements of

this specification.

3.3 Performance and product characteristics. The flare or Mk 45 drogue tray shall

meet the acceptance criteria for performance and product characteristics in the se-

quence indicated in Table III.

3.3.1 Performance.

3.3.1.1 Sealing. The flare shall withstand a vacuum of 6.0 � 1.0 inches of mer-

cury (24 inches of mercury absolute pressure) for a minimum period of 60 seconds

without signs of the leakage.

3.3,1.2 Candle burning. The candle assembly of the flare or Mk 45 drogue tray

shall meet the following requirements:

Attain a minimum candlepower of 1,000,000 within 10 seconds after

ignition.

b. Shall not fall below 1,000,000 candlepower for any period greater than

5 seconds, for a continuous time period of 180 seconds, after initially reaching

1,000,000 candlepower.

Produce a minimum average candlepower of 1,650,000 for a continuous

time period of 180 seconds, after initially reaching 1,000,000 candlepower.

d. Burning time: 180 seconds minimum (defined as that time period

beginning when the candlepower first reaches 1,000,000 and terminating when the

candlepower decays to 1,000,000 at burnout.

3.3.1.3 Static functioning. The flare shall meet the following requirements:

Shall not eject contents less than 1.5 seconds after pulling lanyard.

Ejection of the candle shall not result in ignition.
